Capturing your memories

Do you scrapbook?

Scrapbooking has become a huge hobby for many people over the past few years. Our lives are filled with memories. These memories fade as we grow older. It is important to have something to look back on to remember the wonderful things you did through the years.

Most people have growing children who change every month. Even your teenagers are changing although it is harder to see. If you were to take a picture of them on the first day of every month, I bet you would see a slight difference. It is important to capture those changes in pictures.

Scrapbooking has evolved over the last several years. There are the scrapbookers who scrapbook regularly and put every set of pictures they have into a separate page that they create themselves with acid free paper and embellishments. These scrapbookers are very creative and many have a lot of time on their hands to accomplish this.

There are the scrapbookers who have turned to digital scrapbooks and only focus on a few special things per year. Maybe a child's birthday or a family vacation, or a school year. Those books can be created easily and any of the online websites such as Kodak Gallery, Shutterfly, or Snapfish. This is ideal if you are working, or have children involved in many activities and cannot imagine having time to do one more thing. They are quick and easy and turn out beautifully!

I consider myself someone who dabbles in "both worlds". I like the flexibility of creating a digital book for my daughter's dance season or my son's baseball and soccer seasons, or the family vacations, but I also like to scrapbook with paper in my albums the 4th of July BBQ and the Easter celebration with my parents and brother.

My daughter, who is seven, has started to scrapbook her Brownie pictures so all of her Daisy and Brownie pictures will be in her writing, in a special album that she created, with her special memories from her viewpoint.

Men are wanting to keep a few momentos from, for example, their annual hike with the guys. The postcard they bought, the picture of the guys at the top of the mountain, and the brochure they got with their paid admission. Anything goes. It can be as easy as taking a picture, mounting it with acid free tape to an acid free piece of paper, mounting the brochure and the postcard, and writing the date, where they went, what trails they accomplished, and who fell asleep first.

Scrapbook supplies are everywhere. You can find them online at sites such as Oriental Trading Company, or Michael's carry scrapbook supplies. In my neighborhood we have several independently owned stores. These stores are my favorite because their supplies are unique and they offer times where you can come into the store and work on your albums. Upload your pictures to Costco's website and go pick up your pictures while you are doing your shopping. It's quick and easy and the price is right too! Even if you just focused on a few special events each year, you and your children will cherish them forever.

Make it easy for yourself and don't try to do everything all at once. Start with one event this year and work backwards. That will give you a sense of accomplishment and will encourage you to do another event once you see how easy it can be. It doesn't need to be award winning, it just needs to tell you what you did, when you did it, how your felt when you did it and who was involved. Give as much detail as possible. The arrangement is not as important as the "journaling".

If possible, schedule a monthly scrapbooking night with some friends. You can share ideas and share supplies. (You also have an excuse to have some wine and dessert!)

I hear many people say, "But I forget to bring my camera so I can take pictures." Keep a small digital camera in your purse. Guys, use those big pockets in your cargo pants. Some of my best pictures have come from a spontaneous trip to get ice cream or a group of friends outside of the classroom.

Try it and I bet you will enjoy it. It is a nice outlet of creativity and creating memories that you will be grateful you have later on in life.

Happy Scrappin'
